This seminar meeting provides space in which to think about how to talk about the importance and value of tenure in the current context of the rise of the “new faculty [non-tenured] majority” without the discussion devolving into a zero-sum battle between the “haves” (tenured faculty) and the “have-nots” (the non-tenure eligible). We will engage some of the arguments and dynamics that make it difficult to talk about enhancing the security and welfare of the non-tenure eligible while also valuing the notion of tenure and the protections it is thought to afford. Professor Jed Purdy, Duke University, has agreed to anchor our discussion, with additional contributions from UNC faculty and administrators. The discussion will be moderated by Professor Lloyd Kramer.
